2000 Audi A6 Recalls

Four recalls cover the 2000 Audi A6. The most recent was issued in January 2020: “Air Bag Inflators May Underinflate Bag.” A VIN check at NHTSA shows which are still open on a given car.

  • Air Bag Inflators May Underinflate Bag

Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, possibly causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash. In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the air bag may not properly protect the occupant, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.

  • Crossmember Cover/Drivers Side Dash Fire

Audi S6 and S6 avant vehicles are all equipped with xenon low beam headlights and, therefore, are not longer affected by this recall. This condition could lead to overheating or fire.

    NHTSA 06V198000Owner letter (PDF)Issued Jun 5, 2006.

  • Vw/Drivers Side Dash Fire

A fire could originate in the left dashboard area.

    NHTSA 04V133000Owner letter (PDF)Issued Mar 18, 2004.

  • Vw/Fuel Sending Units

Running out of fuel without warning while the fuel gauge indicates that there is sufficient fuel in the tank lead to safety problems.

    NHTSA 01V157000Issued May 3, 2001.

2000 Audi A6 NHTSA Investigations

NHTSA has opened four investigations that cover the 2000 Audi A6. Two led to a recall and two others have closed.

  • Brake and clutch pedal bracket

    Closed

NHTSA's preliminary evaluation looked into the brake and clutch pedal bracket on 1998-2001 Audi A4 and A6 cars. NHTSA's record has no summary of what it found or how it ended.

    Jan 23, 2002 to Jul 12, 2002

  • Driver's side dashboard fires

    Closed

NHTSA's preliminary evaluation looked into fires on the driver's side of the dashboard in 1999-2000 Audi A6 cars. NHTSA had 22 complaints, 11 for each model year. Audi was testing to find the origin and cause of the fire. NHTSA's record does not say how the evaluation ended.

    Jul 25, 2003 to Nov 25, 2003

  • Dash fires from wiring rubbing on a knee bolster

    Led to a recall

NHTSA's engineering analysis looked into driver's side dash fires in 1999-2000 Audi A6 cars. Audi found the knee bolster under the dash rubbed a wiring harness until wires touched the metal and started a fire. Audi recalled about 186,000 model year 1998-2004 A6 cars under 04V-133 to add a plastic cap that stops the rubbing.

  • Dash fires after the knee bolster recall repair

    Led to a recall

NHTSA's recall query looked into driver's side dash fires in 1998-2000 Audi A6 and S6 cars. It received nine complaints of fires after the recall 04V-133 repair. Audi said the headlight switch wiring could still touch the crossmember if dealers installed the first recall's cover improperly. Audi issued recall 06V-198 for about 66,358 cars, adding a larger cover.

Check Before You Buy

A checklist for the 2000 A6, from its four recalls and the problems owners report most.

Confirm the Recalls Were Done

Ask the seller for proof that each of these recalls was repaired.

On the Test Drive

  • Test the screen, audio and phone connection for freezing or rebooting.
  • Turn the wheel fully left and right, parked and at low speed. Sticking, notches or stiffness are warning signs.

Ask the Seller

Ask whether any of these were ever repaired, and ask to see the receipts.

  • ABS
  • Instrument cluster
  • Fuel tank or fuel lines
  • Also ask for the service records, especially oil changes.

Before You Pay

  • Get an independent pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic you choose.
  • Decode the VIN to confirm the model year, engine and trim.
  • Check the title for salvage, flood or rebuilt branding.
