About Car Reliability Rankings
Based on the database of NHTSA, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and other public data, we developed a rating system to help used car shoppers see which model years to buy and which to avoid.
What We Do
Every model year we cover gets a reliability score from 0 to 100. Our rankings put those years in order, from the model years to buy to the ones to avoid. Each model year also has its own report: the problems owners report most, every recall, the automaker's warranty extensions, NHTSA crash ratings and what to check before you buy.
How We Do It
The scores come from the complaints owners file with NHTSA and from recalls. We adjust for how many of each car were made and compare every model year with the average car of the same age, so popular and older cars are judged fairly. The same rules apply to every car, and no score is changed by hand.
We also read every one of the 71,410 owner complaints behind our pages, one by one, to show which problems owners report most for each model year.
What We Cover
Today we cover the Honda CR-V, Accord, Civic, Pilot and Odyssey, model years 2000 to 2026. We plan to add more makes and models. The NHTSA data on the site is as of Sep 17, 2026, and every data page shows when it was published or last updated.
Independence
Car Reliability Rankings is an independent project. We are not affiliated with NHTSA or any automaker. No automaker or dealer pays for a score, a ranking or a placement.
Corrections
If something looks wrong, please tell us, with the page address and what you noticed. We check every report against the source data and fix what is wrong.
